Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couverte par Charles Messier le 13 octobre 1773. Quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard, Pierre M\u00e9chain , le colloborateur de Messier, remarqua que la galaxie M51 \u00e9tait accompagn\u00e9e d&rsquo;autre plus petite, juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d&rsquo;elle.
